The Jaguars got hot at the right time and have remained that way. Jacksonville has won six straight games, including downing the Chargers in an epic comeback victory last weekend. Lawrence threw four interceptions in the first half, but overcame a 27-0 deficit to take a 31-30 victory in the Jaguars’ first playoff win since the 2017 season.

Jacksonville likely won’t have that margin of error against the Chiefs, who are riding a five-game win streak of their own, snatching the No. 1 seed in the AFC from the Bills in the late stages of the season. With Mahomes and the offense finding their groove once again, they’re a safe bet to challenge for the top spot in the AFC once again.

This high drama is all a result of the NFL’s 14-game playoff format, which was instituted for the 2021 postseason. Now entering its third year, the new format has been successful in creating more late-season competition in the NFL’s wild-card battles.

Soon, though, this drama will be sorted out. Teams will emerge as the 14 postseason participants and each of the season’s final few weeks will whittle out the teams that will be looking ahead to the offseason instead of a potential trip to Glendale.

For the third consecutive year, 14 teams will make it into the NFL postseason. The league will feature seven teams from each conference in the 2023 playoffs, and the No. 1 seed in each conference will be the only team to receive a bye.

The NFL postseason has also been shifted back by a week for the second consecutive season. This is because the league implemented a 17-game schedule in 2021 and continued that practice in 2022. As a result, the Super Bowl will be held on the second Sunday in February instead of the first.

The NFL’s opening playoff round featured the Jaguars completing third-largest comeback in NFL playoff history, the Bengals’ Sam Hubbard recording the longest fumble return for a score in postseason history, the Giants snapping their 12-year drought without a playoff win, and the Cowboys winning their first road playoff game in 30 years.

After a week off, each conference’s top-seeded teams will enter the fray this weekend. On Saturday, the Chiefs, the AFC’s top-seeded team each of the last four years, are one win away from playing in the AFC Championship Game for a record fifth straight year. On the NFC side on Saturday, the top-seeded Eagles are looking to regain their rhythm after losing two of their last three games of the regular season.

The winners of this weekend’s games will advance to the conference title games, where they will get a chance to play for the right to play in Super Bowl XLVII. This. year will mark the fourth Super Bowl played in Arizona and the first since the Patriots rallied to defeat the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.

The NFL announced last week that in the event of a Bills vs. Chiefs matchup in the AFC Championship, the game would be played in Atlanta. It represents the final part of the league’s contingency plan following the cancellation of the Week 17 Bills vs. Bengals game due to Damar Hamlin’s on-field collapse.

The Chiefs retained the No. 1 seed despite playing one more game than the Bills this season, but they will not get home-field advantage if they end up playing Buffalo for a trip to the Super Bowl. If the Chiefs take down the Jaguars and the Bills triumph over the Bengals this weekend, the dramatic showdown between two AFC heavyweights will be locked in as a road trip for both teams.

When will Bills-Chiefs AFC Championship tickets go on sale?

Even though we won’t know the AFC Championship teams until Sunday evening, tens of thousands of fans jumped on the opportunity to buy tickets for a potential Buffalo vs. Kansas City matchup in Atlanta.

Season-ticket holders for both teams had first priority. Those who previously opted in to buy AFC Championship tickets had the opportunity to purchase them as a part of a presale release starting at 10 a.m. ET (9 a.m. CT) on Wednesday.

Where would neutral site Bills-Chiefs AFC Championship game be held?

On January 12th, ahead of Wild Card Weekend, the NFL announced that it had identified Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta as the host site for a potential AFC Championship game between the Buffalo Bill and Kansas City Chiefs. It would be a significant warm-weather deviation from a January matchup in Kansas City.

Why is there a neutral site for Bills-Chiefs AFC Championship game?

The NFL decided to identify a neutral site for a potential Bills-Chiefs AFC Championship matchup after the decision not to resume the Week 17 matchup between the Bills and the Bengals on Monday, January 2nd, where Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a medical emergency and had to be resuscitated on the field. Hamlin spent several days at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, a level-one trauma center, before returning to Buffalo. He spent additional time at Buffalo General Medical Center before being discharged to continue his recovery supported by friends and family.

Because of the unequal number of games completed by the Bills and Chiefs (the Chiefs played 17 full games, to a 14-3 record, while the Bills played 16 to a 13-3 record), the NFL’s owners voted for a resolution that allowed for a neutral site AFC Championship should the Bills and Chiefs both advance to the game.

When will AFC Championship game take place?

The AFC Championship game is scheduled for Sunday, January 29th at 6:30pm ET on CBS and Paramount+, with teams to be determined based on the results of this weekend’s Divisional matchups. Here are all the possible outcomes for locations based on seeding and Divisional Round results:

Chiefs win, Bills win – AFC Championship held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium neutral site
Chiefs win, Bengals win – Chiefs host AFC Championship game
Jaguars win, Bills win – Bills host AFC Championship game
Jaguars win, Bengals win – Bengals host AFC Championship game

In order for the neutral site to be in play, the Chiefs need to beat the Jaguars in the first game of the Divisional Round, Saturday, January 21st on NBC and Peacock. Coverage begins at 3pm ET with kickoff at 4:30pm ET.

Starting with Cincinnati, you would’ve been laughed at if you picked the Bengals to even make the playoffs before this season. The team went 4-11-1 in 2020, they hadn’t made the postseason since 2015 and second-year quarterback Joe Burrow was coming off of ACL surgery.

The Bengals started the season 5-2 before going 5-5 down the stretch, which was still enough to clinch their first NFC North title since 2015. Postseason play is a completely different story in Cincy, though, as the team hadn’t won a playoff game since 1991. This all changed in the wild card round with their 26-19 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Soon after, they went to Nashville and upset the No. 1 seed Tennessee Titans on the foot of rookie kicker Evan McPherson. It’s clear that the Bengals are more than just a Cinderella story at this point.

On the opposing side, the Chiefs are in a familiar spot. Kansas City is hosting the AFC Championship Game for the fourth straight year, looking to advance to its third consecutive Super Bowl. But it didn’t always seem inevitable this season, especially after a 3-4 start. Many celebrated the downfall of the once-budding dynasty, claiming that the league had figured out star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
